Tying the knot

AKA Entering Holy Matrimony.  Marriage.  And preceding it the execution of the 'Marriage Vows'. Whew! How on earth are terms like knots, vows, betroth part of an arrangement that supposedly guarantees to the betrothees and those assembled to view this ridiculous affair pretending there is something permanent here? This blog explores what a crock this whole vowing is.   To begin let us start with the basic plot / thesis or  vowing language as shown below in exhibit A. Exhibit A - I, ___, take thee, ___, to be my wedded husband/wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part, according to God's holy ordinance; and thereto I pledge thee my faith [or] pledge myself to you. First question - what is a 'thee'?  In today's day and age when most people only speak Emoji do we think that this Dickensian language is going to get any takers?  Th...

About Marriage (and Divorce)

Some funny stuff I read recently from the minds of sharp wits - My wife and I were happy for 20 years.  Then we met. Divorce rates among women and dropping these days especially as they have realized that they don't need the pig for a little sausage. Any husband who says 'My wife and I are completely equal partners', is talking about either a law firm or a hand of bridge. Keep your eyes wide open before marriage, half shut afterwards. A good wife always forgives her husband when she's wrong. A man inserted an 'ad' in the classifieds: 'Wife wanted'.  Next day he received a hundred letters. They all said the same thing: 'You can have mine.' The most effective way to re member your wife's birthday is to forget it once.

Ironies

The opposite of ironclad is not ironies (ease). You run after money when you don't have it. You run to keep in shape when you have too much of it. A prenup for a breakup is now common place even in places like India where the whole premise of getting married is to have and to hold (much like a car reservation). A chemically induced high is often followed by a non chemically induced low. Boeing built a much cheaper commercial 777 jet that did a more amazing job of vanishing (with 300 people) without a trace and staying hidden for a month compared to a $2B Lockheed stealth fighter that only carries two people.

The Forties

Having returned from the roaring version (the latitudes in the southern hemisphere) recently  I find myself at a crossroads.  In terms of my present life spent on the planet as measured in years and if there is anything remotely roaring about that.  Not quite a mid life crisis it is a time to ponder what was but I have concluded /decided to focus on what could be.. Coincidentally happened on a couple of movies recently that shed some perspective on this very situation - in a kinda sorta way.. One from Hollywood called 'This is 40' starring Paul Rudd (who I recently became acquainted with - in some other role and who is one of the protagonist in the said title) with some woman who I have never seen before but played her part well of a vain somewhat spoilt mother of two (and happens to be the real life wife of the director - who I suspect also threw in his kids in a kid role to save dineros).  My fave (one of) comedian, Albert Brooks lent a nice supporting cas...
