Das Gas

VW screwed up.  The people's car or Volkswagen is the world's largest maker of automobiles according to sales figures available for 2016.  Based in Germany it was a company originally founded by none other than Ferdinand Porsche, the creator of the eponymous sports car models.

Popular among the younger generation and females more than males, the sedan is an attractive low cost option for a German car driving experience when a BMW or 3 pointed star is out of reach.

Thusly there are lot of VW brand vehicles roaming the streets of Anytown, USA.  As of mid Sept a revelation was brought to the public's attention where the company engineers had installed software in its engine computers to cheat on pollution control tests run by the American Environment Protection agency.

But the tests tripped VW up.  Something I guess was not adding up.  VW finally pleaded mea culpa costing the CEO his job.  People chimed in on national TV and internet saying they were taken and that it was shameful that a car company had lied and destroyed their trust.

This is not the first nor the last of these events, few years ago Ford was in the doldrums when their popular SUV started tipping and crashing- turned out the tires were bad; then Toyota had a computer malfunction on their Prius hybrids that sent them running off on their own; the General had its issues when their Motors showed up with defective ignition switches causing death.

There will be class actions and other suits, some designer (for the lawyers) and some not but in the end the company will pay up restitution and people will keep breathing a sigh of (polluted) relief.

BTW what exactly is a sigh?  I am not sure I have breathed one.  Apart from the relief version are there other kinds?  If so who is making them?  Please send all responses to the -

    Sigh (saay) is usually the creamy variety on top of milk that some don't like, and some sigh, that they aren't allowed to have it.

Presumptive Society

Today's world is hyper connected.  I am not so sure what it means but you hear it a lot.  It is probably hyper but not sure how connected it is.  Sugar (fermented or not) is available in many ways than before and so getting hyper is easy.  It is probably more a threat than cocaine since it is sold legally. And what is this connected stuff?  Most people I encounter seem disconnected from reality.  So going back to this assumption that we are connected there are subtle and no so subtle instances of how brands and companies and middle men try to portray someone - A linkedin profile for somebody working for X years at a place advertises to the connected network that so and so is CELEBRATING X years @ Such and Such Inc. Do we know if (s)he is celebrating or cringing?  Perhaps a better way to portray will be - So and So LASTED X years @ such & such inc. Then it exhorts the readership to go ahead and congratulate them for this lasting effe...

Greasy Dra'ch'ma

With all the furor in the media around Greece for the past couple of years I thought it would be good to list all things Greek that people use in common parlance - 1. Some of us are familiar with Greek history as being where the world's largest organized scam was born - called the Olympics. At the time this courier delivered a message by running a large number of miles and that got converted into a spectator sport. Nobody thought about what this implied?
