Do costumes matter?

It is time for America to get into a garment to be used only once in a lifetime and beg for candy.  Aka Halloween.  Said garment is identified as a costume and can be time consuming to procure and wear depending on the level of enthusiasm of the beggar.  Usually children; some adults who still milk this tradition hiding behind a mask.

This time as before I have oft wondered about the idea of costumes.  I get when you are on stage in a play or a movie that costumes are integral to the framing of the story.

You need Stallone to have lot of ketchup marking the spots he is bleeding and the shirt needs to be ripped enough to show his ripped rib cage else we cannot believe he just fought like a badass.

But today when I read about the Pope appointing a first ever black American as Cardinal I was struck by the same question.  Especially as I read the story with some graphics and photos of the two.

The Catholic religion as any other preaches the virtue of being human.  Above all be kind, be empathetic and help fellow human.  Not bad.

But then why wear fantastical garbs to do the preaching?  Would the message get diluted?  Is theater part of the message?  Are people so gullible that without they would wander off like sheep?

Is it not inherent to the faith to see beyond the superficial?  Vexing to say the least.

This is true of many religions and memberships where a certain suit or coat gets you privilege and a polo shirt with shorts not.  Many customs are just that.  Embedded in the occult, superstition or past rites.

Why a large part of the Arab world masks themselves, women especially so?  One could argue it protects them from the quirks of nature when a massive sand storm might choke you and a garb around your entire face might be prudent.  But I have not heard of this being a recurring phenom in Saudi Arabia.  So it is largely a dictat.

I have witnessed the believers in St. Peters in front of the current Pope.  A prayer service called the Papal mass.  It is an almost somber yet elegant gathering.  Faithful dutifully gather in the plaza and listen to hours of sermon or some sort of praise the lord and his message.

The current Pope is from Argentina and seems to be a forward looking one.  I understand from reading about him that he has already tracked away from lot of ritualistic image management activities and eschewed certain garments or ornaments common to the papacy.

Although one often wonders if he could be spotted in an Adidas track pant sipping a coke and munching down a pastrami sandwich while watching football.  At least on some big game day.

The film 'Two Popes' was a theatric glimpse into his election by his predecessor pope and was a watchable movie.

Of Jims and Johns

Here is another essay on the subject of first names. As in birth names. Or names provided to an offspring at birth. While the developed world tends to shy away from the exotic like Refrigerator or Coca Cola for their new production there is a plethora of Jims and Johns and Bobs or Robs. Speaking of which I do not think there is a categoric decision point at the time of birth if a child will be hereafter called as Bob. I mean have not yet met a toddler called Bob or Rob for that matter. At some point though the parental instinct to mouth out multiple syllables runs out and they switch from calling the crawler Robert to simply Robbie to Rob. Now speaking of - it is strange that the name sounds like something you would not want Rob to do - i.e. Rob anyone. Then why call someone that? After all Rob Peter to Pay Paul is not exactly a maxim to live a young life? Is it? Perhaps Peter or Paul might want to have a say in it? Then there is this matter of going to the John. Why degrad...

But What If We're Wrong?

I attempted to read this book by author Chuck Klosterman backward to forward but it started hurting my brain so I decided to stop and do it like any other publication in the English language.  Start from page 1 and move to the right. Witty, caustic and thought provoking this is a book you want to read if you believe that the status quo might, just might be wrong. At times bordering on being contrarian about most things around us it tries to zero in on the notion of what makes anything believable and certain in our minds.  The fact that there is a fact itself is ironic.  Something analogous to the idea that you can never predict the future because there is no future. Many books and movies have tried to play on this concept - best that I recollect (I think I am) was 'The Truman Show'.  This book by Klosterman attempts to provoke the reader to at least contemplate that what they think they know may be wrong. He uses examples like concept of gravity, and how it ...

Presumptive Society

Today's world is hyper connected.  I am not so sure what it means but you hear it a lot.  It is probably hyper but not sure how connected it is.  Sugar (fermented or not) is available in many ways than before and so getting hyper is easy.  It is probably more a threat than cocaine since it is sold legally. And what is this connected stuff?  Most people I encounter seem disconnected from reality.  So going back to this assumption that we are connected there are subtle and no so subtle instances of how brands and companies and middle men try to portray someone - A linkedin profile for somebody working for X years at a place advertises to the connected network that so and so is CELEBRATING X years @ Such and Such Inc. Do we know if (s)he is celebrating or cringing?  Perhaps a better way to portray will be - So and So LASTED X years @ such & such inc. Then it exhorts the readership to go ahead and congratulate them for this lasting effe...
