I know my all time favorite comedian once explored this deep subject of how society would look like if we all said what we wanted, when we wanted. Just blurt it out like Cosmo Kramer - as soon as the thought entered our medulla (or is it the hippocampus - can never get it right).
Politically correct or PC has become another bane of modern society in that a lot of work never gets done as people are busy trying to appease all those that surround them - at work - in schools - on the phone - email - et al.
Those that are shrewd in this so called art move ahead in their social, business and facebook lives I perceive. However it also leads to the puzzle of figuring out what genuine really looks like. Motive and action are not necessarily congruent in modern life and depending on cultures, geographies and circumstance people have become adept at using new fangled terminology to convey their thought.
It has also given rise to a whole new lexicon to avoid hurting somebody's feelings. Another favorite author and thinker (now dead) of mine by the name of George Carlin railed against this PC idea and had a rant about how the blind are now called visually impaired while the nurses have variety of brands to identify them including primary care givers.
In this nonsense noise that surrounds us I think we are going to realize that nothing will ever get done or take twice and thrice as long that one would lose interest. Already there are signs of it as you look at governments across the world with bloated budgets trying to get roads fixed or airports built taking time to wade through bureaucracy which is nothing more than a way of appeasing constituents that have vested interests.
There are pre meetings to discuss what should be said in a meeting and Dilbert like scenarios are more commonplace than you would think.
I tend to harbor the pessimist view since I do not really see any motivation for change to status quo. People like to be coddled and are just getting soft. One exception comes to mind - local mafia - they seem to not talk much - you do what you are told or they just plug you! No emotion here.
This autumn the weather gods cooperated as we took a family trip in the northeast to see six states that qualify or makeup what is known colloquially in America as New England. Mass, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Rhode Island (tiniest state in the union). The outing helped tally up the states we either lived in, visited or have worked in to 47. Guess which three have eluded this intrepid traveling family. Any rate the drive was all in about 1,800 miles and included some memorable geographic wonders or points of interest. Easternmost part of state of Massachusetts being one. Furthest drivable road east in Mass being another. Visit to all Ivy League schools (term harkens to a collegiate athletics conference and generally regarded as elite academic institutes of some repute worldwide) is another random bucket list item of which this trip afforded the chance to knock two more of the list. Dartmouth in Hanover, NH and Brown (and its sister institute the RISD - school f
