Basmati Blues.  A ridiculous indie musical.   On many fronts.  The director, one Danny Baron also agrees in an offbeat interview.  Lot about this film is whacky. For starters it stars Oscar winner Brie Larson.  With Donald Sutherland who actually sings in the movie.  What the f?  Imagine a cross between Roja and La La land except the result is wretched.  Then there is a motley crew of random erstwhile catwalk models both male and female, some of Indian origin, along with a set of motley desi actors who on occasion pop up in an English language film. There is a smattering of Kishore Kumar songs in the background as part of the thematic score including 'Ina Mina Diga'... but the songs appear out of place given the setting is the western coastal state of Kerala where the film is shot. Prior to our recent trip to Japan I had gotten enamored with the food from that land.  All manners of noodles, fried preparations refered to as Tempura and of course Sushi.  A term generically used to signify a whole plethora of items that have vinegared rice as a common ingredient.  Many contain fish as the next most abundant inclusion and the rolls that are crafted from it are a treat. Japan offered an exclusive variety that was always fresh in taste and ubiquitous from train stations to tourist sites ensuring I was adequately nourished. I recently discovered an 'all you can stuff' in one sitting type of place in Foster City (which is on the peninsula of the bay area).  Typically I am wary of such invites since the food is mass produced and sits there depending on whether someone actually consumes it or not. I live in California and today I felt saddened by what the media reported..this is not what I live for. 1. Rice contains arsenic and consuming it daily is going to kill me soon - now I have to go back to downing more alcohol by skipping all the fermentation that I was doing naturally by eating rice daily; 2. Zuckerberg is now the 36th richest (not paying attention or taxes) dude amongst all dudes and dudettes that live - see I hate to see my state lose the top 10 ranking in anything including the number of richest dudes in the state - cramps my style; 3. Neither contender for the top job as Pres has what it takes to fix this mess we are in..we are not even sure what we need.. for that matter we are stuck trying to define what a need is. Indeed. 4.
