Things I like

It is said one must focus on what one likes and have a positive outlook about life in general.  I say its worth trying.  In the spirit of that concept below I will share some of my simple joys that I can partake as I go through life. These also tend to actually improve the quality of my life.  In no particular order these are things I see, read or do.  Food or Drink I consume or people I meet.  I must say the latter is a relatively low percentage in attributing to quality of life but that's just me. I am sure people can figure out a similar matrix for themselves and figure out how to boost the engagement with things that matter to them most.  Perhaps we will all be happy that way! Humor is a big part of my life and I seek it out in many ways - sometimes it just happens to be in your face when you least expect it... While Bourdain is gone he left an amazing legacy behind.  I thoroughly enjoyed watching him delve into a new frontier using a...

Loss

Weight loss remains an abstract idea in my mind.  Not entirely sure if I am going to or could make any sort of concerted effort towards it.  Food is top of mind.  Curiosity about all aspects of food seems to be a driving force that I cannot control. On the flip side of all that enjoyment through nourishment came a couple of sad losses this year.  First the world lost Anthony Bourdain.  With his irreverent wit and hunger to discover worlds we only knew on a map in the atlas, he brought an unfamiliar landscape close to home.  He took his own life in France. This week we lost another curious mind.  Jonathan Gold.  A favorite LA area food writer (not critic although his Pulitzer will make you believe otherwise) and consummate gourmand.  His navigating the Los Angeles food scene was provocative (the Beyonce and taco comparison) and informative and I benefited from his discoveries when I went and tried the food.  Especially on Pico Stre...

Parts Unknown - the story of our food

As large network programming goes I am not a fan,  and cannot remember much of any particular show that I clicked with since coming to America two decades ago. Every person follows something they individually crave or have a deep affection for and seek out a life to live vicariously through the media they watch. In our case both the wife and I love to eat and explore flavors - we live to eat - and try to appreciate the varied lifestyles of the people that inhabit this oblate hardware we call Earth.  To that point we have been fortunate to visit some remote parts of this planet from the southern fringes of Australia and New Zealand to the northern latitudes of Alaska and some parts in between. Food of course comes in many forms sometimes living and mostly dead (assuming it had parents) and can be manipulated in terms of texture and the final flavor profile before it hits your plate and your palate. Growing up with a largely vegetarian diet in a country where a cow is s...
