Hair in the ear

I grew up with watching a lot of adults working their ass off to feed the family.  My dad or my father in law or their friends all slaving away from factory floors to cubicles to some running their own businesses. One theme common to these aging adults was their sprouting hair from all orifices visible to me. Nose hair and more dominant their ear hair.  It just grew as a natural evolutionary code from eons past and no one paid any attention to it.  Their work did not suffer and they were the same family focused individuals they always were. Enter 2020 - that too the bubble called Silicon Valley.  It is official.  Not only are hirsute characteristics passe, they are frowned on and can cost you your job or at least a promotion. When a recent out of work adult friend of mine told me he had gone bald I worried.  I asked if he was doing ok healthwise.  His response - 'dude I shaved it off to get ahead'.  'In my career.' Apparently the whos w...

Viewing Parties and other silliness

Rich people have many ways to show off.  This one involves parading a winning sports franchise /team down the street of their hometown after winning the trophy in their respective sport. As in the case of the Warriors team taking the NBA championship this year. This pro basketball team is based in Oakland CA.  So the city after inviting the team back from Cleveland where they went to win and bring the trophy and respective big money prizes is hosting a parade. Said parade is at the expense of tax payer money - which the city does not have - Oakland appears broke given the state of disrepair, yet somehow happens to find money to pay for floats, police overtime, sweeping the streets after the party et al. The believers (a self defined term for the fan base) or the faithful (to the sport - which happens to epitomize capitalism where every player is traded for the most money) spend additional gobs of money - money they do not have and might be close to a foreclosur...

Stuck behind a stick

A selfie stick that is.  Another supposedly great idea to help with taking pictures where no man could go before, it has morphed into a safety hazard.  On our recent excursion into the Sierra wilderness we encountered these hoards of teenager zombies that were intent on capturing their grins amidst the verdant canyons.  Perched on ledges or rock precipices they were not only risking their own life and limb in so doing they also started blocking traffic with this cane like object protruding at weird angles in the path where others tried to tread. If there was an invention to aid in self admiration since the mirror, it has to be this telescoping stick that can hold a cell phone that allows to take pictures of the stick owner- specifically with backdrops that vary depending on how insane you are.  Instant sharing of the same follows with the chick finding app now popular across 1.5 billion citizens.  Vanity thy name is humanity. Some were newbies to the whole s...
