Appearing Presidential

Ever wonder why cosmetics and accouterments sell so well worldwide?  Appearances. Vanity.  the collective human lust for this elusive of all naivety.  Call it what you will but someone's external characteristic's have long been considered a proxy of what the actual individual might deliver or be - as an individual.  I don't get it and don't care for it but hey, who cares what I think. Our president travels this week to a mysterious part of the world described simply as the middle east - which in itself begs the question - how does a direction have a middle?  And if so what is the early east and latest east?  Is the latest east so late that it is the early west?  But I digress. The reason for his visit is literally touted by the touts aka media as to 'Appear Presidential' on the world stage.  First of all who decided that the world stage is in the middle east?  It is like saying the dining table is in the dining hall.  Except this ar...

Going Viral

The Centers for Disease Control or CDC has shut down.  CDC was a federal government funded body tasked with researching causes of disease and develop means and ways to control or eradicate the same in the interest of public health. It is a headline I am waiting to see any day now.  What with so many things going viral these days there is just no way to control the outbreak and no dollars to fund the research. Most viral situations these days are directly attributable to a bored public that has experienced never before seen levels of psychosomatic disorders. As early as 10 years ago people did not know of social media and tended to be social on occasion.  Now that social has taken on its own space in society there has been a mass diarrhea of opinions and videos and banter that is simply hard to fathom and speaks volumes of the decaying human brain. From breast feeding moms to space suit wearing grannies to four legged pets of various size, color and...

Trump lining on the political cloud

For every unappealing event or person one must look for the sliver of silver.  Or so the saying goes.  It is the same with American politics in its present state and the presence of an unusual superego (the ego part is a must to be in any limelight for anyone) in the form of the Donald. With the airwaves awash in negativity about all that he says and does it is also IMHO exposing a chink in the media's armor.  That of unbiased reporting.  Some journalists have gone as far as to say that this time is an exception. But in fact that is not so.  I have been observing the American media more closely than any other given I have the desire to be "informed" and it provides one point of view that shapes my own opinion.  It seems that depending on the vested interests of the broadcaster the news or talk shows tends to conform to a predetermined ideology or designed to merely confuse the viewer or reader to the point of feeling irrelevant. Take the word media f...

Spotlight - Film Review

This spring has been good in terms of getting to watch some good film-making.  We watched 'Room'; 'Bridge of Spies'; and then this latest one called 'Spotlight'. Spotlight is titled after an investigation and research team that works inside the Boston Globe, a 150 plus year old newspaper (today owned by a private wealthy investor).   This bunch of veteran journalists in Boston broke the story on the Sex Abuse Scandal that has infected the global Catholic Church system. This major news item was published on the front pages in 2002 after a couple years of hard investigative journalism.  While the screenplay is representative of the reality and the number of investigators it took to uncover these sad truths about child abuse and molestation of the nth degree by god's chosen few, it does shine the spotlight on the hypocrisy that we live in. While the Boston natives were themselves stunned to learn of the evil lurking in their place of worship, and the var...

Tuning Out

This morning I am thinking of how we deal with available information that bombards us in petabytes on a daily basis and how we have to make sense of it all for ourselves and for our children. This from a semi avid blogger who contributes in kilos to the petas. What got me thinking was an off hand remark from an acquaintance recently. When asked if he had heard about a recent large scale, headline item, power outage in India he remarked that he did not pay much attention to the news - in fact he did NOT listen to them as a rule. That got me thinking. Was he serious or delusional or somehow had more sense than most of us walking around? Recent tragedies including the one in Connecticut just yesterday which had our president step out and say 'Our Hearts Are Broken Today' was headline news. Whether that is something you can ignore or take in stride and move on is what I am trying to determine. For all its achievements humanity stuns us yet again. Media plays an important r...

Anything will do

To get excited these days it would seem. We had two very senseless (make that three) events capture headlines this past week. One was of course the production and apparent broadcast of a disturbing (inciteful not insightful) video that enraged the Muslims. Then there was the fallout in the form of violent protest from a minority group that was itching to pull the trigger and this video definitely took them over the edge. What followed is tragic - more so than the thoughtless act that produced the film. People who were going about their daily routines were faced with certain disruptions of varying degrees - some lost lives. What for? Then there was the third event although not literally fatal showed another side of our condition. Obsession with celebrity photos. Three adjectives further drove the frenzy. Naked, Princely and Bosom. In this day and age where architecturally wonderful images of the mammaries can be had for next to nothing for those that desire it I am appalled a...
